Meet the Teacher: Brooke Koyle

Creative Writing & Fiction

At The HeART Collective, our teachers aren’t just instructors — they’re members of this community who show up every week to share something they love. Today we’d like you to meet Brooke Koyle, who teaches Creative Writing and Fiction here at The HeART Collective in Payson, UT. Brooke has been writing since she was 13 and brings the same infectious energy to her classroom that she brings to every story she tells. We interviewed her and this is what she shared.

I’ve Been Writing Since 13

I teach the Intro to Creative Writing and Intermediate Fiction classes, as well as the Beginner Fiction Writing summer boot camps. Writing is something I’ve been doing consistently since I was 13. From fan fiction to fantasy to dystopian, I’ve dabbled in all kinds of genres and ideas.

Before coming to The HeART Collective, I taught several workshops through the Operation Literacy non-profit, specifically at their StoryCon event and the previous iteration, Teen Author Boot Camp. Those experiences helped me find my footing as a teacher and showed me just how hungry young writers are for a space where their ideas are taken seriously.

The Lightbulb Moment

What I love most about teaching writing is watching students have their “lightbulb” moment — the sparkle that twinkles in their eyes the moment they have a groundbreaking idea or connection. It’s truly magical.

One moment that never ceases to bring a smile to my face happened when I was teaching about the plot pyramid. After passing out worksheets, an attendee flipped hers over, scrunched up her nose, and gave me a glare. She asked, “Why does a story have to follow this?”

Her question helped me realize that not all stories are made to fit in a single box or method. I learned something profound that day. No matter how many people may walk in or out of my class, it’s a place for all of us to learn — even the teacher!

No Idea Is a Bad Idea

The one thing I wish every student knew before their first class: no idea is a bad idea. All it takes is a little polishing, elbow grease, and practice to get any idea transformed into something magical!

My teaching style is interactive, upbeat, and engaging. I want every student to walk away feeling like their voice matters and their story is worth telling — because it is.

Outside of teaching, I write, of course. But I also enjoy golfing, reading, playing video games, and Dungeons and Dragons. I contain multitudes — and so do my students.

This Class Is for Everyone

If you’re ready to jump into an idea you’ve been dreaming up, or just want to explore a new side of yourself or the world, this is the class for you! And don’t worry — it won’t be as hard as calculus, I promise!

It is open to all! Young or old, big or small, everyone has an idea. Chase it, before you’re too weak to run. “Courage is not the absence of fear but the mastery of it.”

Quote from Brooke Koyle: “I believe creativity is an extension of our hearts and souls — a window into the potential each of us has inside ourselves.”
